Despite his uncertain standing in WWE, former World Champion Alberto Del Rio recently praised Vince McMahon, calling him the “mastermind” behind modern wrestling. In an interview with Eduardo Bates, Del Rio spoke highly of the former WWE chairman and his influence on the industry.
Del Rio explained why he believes McMahon was essential to WWE’s success and to his own career. “Vince created all the characters—the entire golden era of WWE exists because of him,” he said. “What most people don’t know—because they really don’t know him—is that he’s the mastermind behind the industry. Everything we have in wrestling today exists thanks to him. I was always one of his favorites because of my dedication, professionalism, and effectiveness—because Alberto Del Rio can do whatever he wants with the crowd. He makes them believe, makes them feel that what’s happening in the ring is real, exactly as he intends it to be.”
Del Rio’s comments come at a critical point in his career. His contract shifted to WWE in April 2025 after the company acquired Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide. Yet, he has not appeared on any WWE programming, including crossover shows like Worlds Collide or TripleMania. For now, his role remains unclear.
A divided future
According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, WWE executives are split on Del Rio’s future. Some see him as a key figure for global expansion, especially in Mexico where he remains popular. Others remain cautious due to his history of controversies. The uncertainty is compounded by his AAA storyline exit, where he lost a “Loser Leaves Town” match just before the WWE takeover.
Although still under contract, WWE has no creative plans for him. His last match took place on September 26 for an AAA affiliate. Meanwhile, fans in Mexico continue to show support—his name still rings out in chants at recent AAA events.
