As speculation continues regarding a potential return to WWE programming for Alberto El Patron, fellow AAA star Mr. Iguana has weighed in on the veteran’s current standing with wrestling audiences in Mexico.
During a recent appearance on the WrestleBinge podcast, Mr. Iguana described the unique and powerful reaction El Patron is currently receiving in AAA. Despite being presented as a heel, the crowds have embraced him, turning him into a fan favorite.
“Alberto is — I’m like, you can hear the crowd getting crazy for him and he’s like a big heel. And right now, I don’t know, Lucha Libre is so mysterious that from being the big heel, now people is cheering for him, he’s becoming a big baby face — big baby face,” Mr. Iguana explained. “Yeah, so this is the magic of Lucha, you don’t know, you can’t control the crowd, because the crowd is the one that’s telling you what they want to see.”
The discussion surrounding El Patron’s future intensified after WWE announced its acquisition of AAA during WrestleMania 41 weekend in April 2025. Initial reports in May suggested El Patron, who was the AAA Mega Champion, had signed a new WWE contract. However, subsequent clarifications indicated WWE was inheriting his existing AAA deal, with journalist Dave Meltzer noting that an appearance on regular WWE television was unlikely.
This sentiment was reinforced by a mid-June 2025 report stating there was “zero chance” of El Patron appearing on WWE’s main shows, echoing a statement from a company higher-up in 2023 who said there was “no f*****g chance” of a return. The possibility alone generated significant online backlash from fans, citing El Patron’s controversial history, which includes a 2014 release from WWE following an incident with a backstage employee. His tenure with the company consisted of two separate runs between 2010 and 2016.
A physical altercation involving El Patron on a live Mexican talk show in late May 2025 further fueled concerns. In response to the public criticism, a statement from Lucha Libre Online defended El Patron, noting he was drug-free, had no criminal convictions, and had “reinvented himself.”
Meanwhile, Mr. Iguana has become a popular figure himself since the WWE-AAA partnership began. However, he reportedly drew some backstage heat after claiming that WWE intended to move him directly to the main roster, bypassing NXT.
