AEW Champion Says John Cena Is the Best on the Mic

Shelton Benjamin recently offered his perspective on who possesses the strongest microphone skills in professional wrestling, identifying a former WWE colleague. Speaking on the “Energis Podcast,” Benjamin stated unequivocally, John Cena’s, to me, the best promo in wrestling.”

Benjamin elaborated on his choice, referencing their time developing in the Ohio Valley Wrestling system alongside other talents such as Randy Orton, Batista, and Brock Lesnar. He highlighted Cena’s unique ability to engage audiences, remarking, “He’s always been a guy…when he talks, he can win over anybody. You put him in any situation, it can be as ridiculous or serious [as possible], and he makes it work.”

Recalling a conversation from their OVW days around 2001 or 2002, Benjamin shared Cena’s method for refining his promos. “He said, ‘I’m a nerd, man. I just sit at home and talk to myself in the mirror,'” Benjamin recounted. He added that later, Vince McMahon also advocated for the practice of talking to oneself in a mirror. Benjamin admitted his own insecurity prevented him from adopting this technique.

Currently, Shelton Benjamin holds the AEW World Tag Team Championship with Bobby Lashley, a reign that commenced on January 22 and is noted as the sixth longest for that title. Their faction, The Hurt Syndicate, recently expanded.

On the May 21 episode of AEW Dynamite, MJF was officially brought into The Hurt Syndicate. His inclusion came after weeks of seeking approval from MVP, Benjamin, and Lashley, with Lashley’s agreement secured after MJF defeated Top Flight. At the Double or Nothing event, Lashley and Benjamin successfully defended their AEW World Tag Team Championships against Dustin Rhodes and Sammy Guevara. MJF, present at ringside, contributed to their victory by raking Rhodes’ eyes, which set up Lashley to secure the win with a spear.
