Did Sting have an affair with a feared wrestler’s ex? Recalling the rumor that got the AEW legend into a real fight

In March 2024, legendary professional wrestler Sting retired from in-ring competition. In his final match, he teamed up with his protégé, Darby Allin, and defended the AEW World Tag Team Championship against The Young Bucks. Stinger and Allin won the match, and the Icon retired as champion.

In his long and celebrated career, The Vigilante has seen several ups and downs. One of the most fascinating stories involving him is his rumored affair with a wrestler named Dark Journey. The 67-year-old’s government name is Lynda Newton. She was reportedly once in a relationship with the now-deceased wrestler, Dick Slater, during the 1980s.

After they broke up in 1986, a rumor emerged that The Vigilante and Journey were an “item.” Even though none of this was true, the former AEW World Tag Team Champion was allegedly whacked in the dressing room by Slater because the latter believed the rumor.

In an old episode of Wrestling Shoot Interviews, retired New Zealand professional wrestler Bushwhacker Luke spoke about this almost forgotten story. Luke also debunked the rumor, claiming there was ”no truth to that.”

“Someone told Dickie that they [Sting and Dark Journey] were an item. And fu*king Dickie came into the dressing room and grabbed him and next, he went WACK. Murdoch interfered and stuff. But there was no truth to that [the affair],” he said. [From 1:22 to 2:40]

Sting on working with Darby Allin

The Vigilante and Darby Allin have a very close relationship. Last year, Stinger had an in-depth conversation with Bleacher Report in which he praised the Daredevil star’s selflessness and his desire to make All Elite Wrestling a better company.

“He’s always thinking, not just about himself but about others, and how to make AEW as a whole better. How to get a better rating. How to get the roar of the crowd to happen. To put butts in seats. He’s a leader; a guy who was bullied as a kid and has figured it out, and he now leads by example,” The Icon said. [H/T: Bleacher Report]

The Icon is best known for his time in the now-defunct World Championship Wrestling, where he held the WCW World Heavyweight Championship six times.
