John Cena is just one title away from breaking Ric Flair’s 16 world championship wins record. Most fans want the Cenation Leader to beat the record and become a 17-time World Champion in his final WWE run. It seems Cena’s former rival also wants to see the record broken.
In a recent edition of Live Q&A on Backstage Pass, JBL shared his opinion on John Cena potentially winning a 17th world title in his final WWE run. The Hall of Famer said nobody deserved the accolade more than Cena and that it’d be cool to see John beat Flair’s record.
“I’m with Gerry [Gerald Brisco] on Cena winning that 17th championship. To me, nobody deserves it. I don’t know about deserves, but I don’t know how you find someone more deserving than Cena… who, by the way, had the hardest role of any champion in history. He had to follow the Attitude Era where you could cuss, drink, put people off, and he had a G-rated era and he carried the company to that era.”
He continued:
“I don’t know if anybody else in the history of this business could have done that except for John Cena. And he’s done it so well. I called most of his matches and to see him night after night, do what he did and make so many stars. You know, contrary to what a lot of people say out there, he made a ton of stars, and he carried the company. I’d love to see him when it’s just because I think it’d be cool to see… that record break.” [From 37:20 onwards]
AEW star Adam Copeland (formerly Edge) recently shared his thoughts on John Cena’s looming retirement. Their rivalry was a major staple of the Ruthless Aggression Era and is credited with solidifying their position as the top heel and babyface of WWE at the time.
Cena’s last world title win came at the 2017 Royal Rumble when he beat AJ Styles to win his 16th World Championship. Cena would drop the title two weeks later to Bray Wyatt inside the Elimination Chamber. It remains to be seen if Cena will get his 17th world title in his final WWE run.
