The prospect of The Undertaker joining WWE’s creative team has generated discussion, but former head writer Vince Russo has voiced significant reservations about the idea. While acknowledging the legend’s extensive experience, Russo argues that the inherent biases of any long-tenured in-ring talent make them unsuitable for a neutral creative position.
The core of Russo’s concern is not about The Undertaker’s resume, but the personal relationships and history he would bring to the role. Speaking on a recent episode of The Wrestling Outlaws, the veteran writer explained that favoritism would be an unavoidable issue.
“It’s not just the resume bro, it’s the baggage. It’s the people that you are booking for and you are doing creative for, you have probably worked with. And if you haven’t worked with them, you at least know them. And for somebody that has been around as long as Taker, and bro, this isn’t a Taker thing, this isn’t an anybody thing. He is gonna have favorites. He is gonna have people he likes, he is gonna have people he doesn’t like. You are never gonna get an even playing field, bro, when talent are involved in creative,” Russo stated.
This critique arrives amidst confirmed reports from late June that The Undertaker himself is open to the idea. The WWE Hall of Famer has expressed a long-standing interest in a backstage position and confirmed discussions have taken place. However, he stipulated that he would only accept if he could be “100% committed,” citing concerns about being a distraction otherwise.
The speculation about his creative future intensified after wrestling veteran Konnan reported seeing him actively involved backstage at recent WWE events, including Money in the Bank. Konnan noted his belief that The Undertaker is “very interested” in joining the team, a move that could provide a new purpose for the legend following his in-ring retirement.
