Former WWE star says she was given strict rules before making her onscreen debut

A former WWE star recently recalled her onscreen debut for the company. She says she was given strict rules backstage.

Layla is now a household name for every WWE fan. She got her start in the company in a rather unconventional way. She was part of the 2006 Divas Search competition where several women would compete each week and the winner would receive a contract. Layla won the contest and became a WWE Superstar.

During a recent appearance on the No Name Wrestling podcast, Layla described how she felt during her time in the Divas Search competition. She said being surrounded by several gorgeous women made her think that she would not be able to win. She also recalled the women were given very strict locker room rules on how to conduct themselves which she took seriously. However, this didn’t stop other women from fighting with each other.

“When I got there, we were given very strict rules on how to conduct ourselves and what not to do and what to do and I took that really seriously. So, I just stayed in our locker room. I didn’t go anywhere but the girls would be, like, fighting. They were backstage, some of the girls would be having full on fights.” [17:59 – 18:17]

Layla says WWE cut time for certain matches

The WWE women’s division has come a long way in the past decade. The women are now more than just eye candy to please the fans. In recent years, members of the women’s roster have been involved in major storylines and historic moments. Over the years, the women have participated in steel cages, hell in a cell, and even WarGames matches. They have also main-evented WrestleMania.

However, this was not the case back in the day as the women were treated like backburners. As a result, they would suffer by having their time cut to make way for some of the men’s matches, which would go over their allotted time.

During the same podcast, Layla said that the WWE didn’t care about the women’s division back in the day and hence, the girls would often get their time cut which would make it hard for them to build a story.

“But for the girls, we weren’t factored for anything and it was hard for us to do it because we were always the ones who would get our time cut. It was always like ‘One minute, two minutes, three minutes.’ So, what I feel, like, LayCool was able to to attain in that short period of time was pretty amazing because the company was behind us but not as much as they are behind the WWE women superstars at present.” [14:33 – 15:07]

Layla joining the Divas Search competition turned out to be the best thing for her as it helped her get to the next level in WWE.
