At WWE Survivor Series: WarGames, World Heavyweight Champion Gunther retained his belt against Damian Priest. Although his victory may have been slightly tainted by Finn Bálor’s interference, The Ring General’s spontaneous retaliation to Bálor was proof that he did not need any favors. It also may have been a sign that his rivalry with The Archer of Infamy is over for now.
Elsewhere on the card, the Austrian’s protégé Ludwig Kaiser challenged Intercontinental Champion Bron Breakker in a Triple Threat match, also featuring Sheamus. Even in defeat, Kaiser proved that he belonged.
During the post-show, Gunther was interviewed by Stu Bennet, Jackie Redmond, and Big E. The World Heavyweight Champion was asked about Kaiser’s failure to claim gold at the event. He responded favorably to his protégé, stating that he is proud of the latter:
“I told Ludwig [Kaiser] a couple weeks back to step out of my shadow. I’m very proud of him,” he said.
Now that Priest is seemingly out of the picture, what is next for The Ring General? We may find out as early as tonight’s episode of WWE RAW, which is scheduled to air live from the Angel of the Winds Arena in Everett, Washington.
Is John Cena’s WWE return in 2025 going to spell doom for Gunther?
Former WWE employee Tommy Carlucci can’t seem to wrap his head around the lengthy title reign of Gunther, which commenced at SummerSlam earlier this year.
On Behind The Turnbuckle: The Last Word, Tommy Carlucci discussed Gunther’s reign as World Heavyweight Champion. Carlucci claimed that it only makes sense if John Cena is ultimately going to win his 17th World Title at WrestleMania 41 from The Ring General:
“I just don’t understand what they see in Gunther keeping the title this long. And are they planning to give him the title all the way to Rumble and possibly to WrestleMania? And the only reason why I could think of WrestleMania is that he faces Cena and Cena wins,” he said.
John Cena’s recent Instagram post, as seen above, is a reference to the Royal Rumble. WWE has announced his involvement in the premium live event next year, scheduled for February 1st. Could Cena win his third Rumble and headline WrestleMania 41 against The Ring General for the World Heavyweight Championship? Only time will tell.
