John Cena Receives New Nickname in WWE

WWE has officially adopted the “Super Cena” moniker for its 17-time world champion, John Cena, a nickname long used by fans to describe his dominant booking. The company used the term in a video posted to its Instagram account showcasing a feat of strength where Cena delivered an Attitude Adjustment to the much larger Bronson Reed.

The official acknowledgment comes at a unique time in Cena’s career, as he is currently performing as the company’s top heel. This villainous turn has been a central part of his ongoing farewell tour and includes a notable rivalry with CM Punk, whom he recently defeated at Night of Champions on June 28. His current character is a stark contrast to the heroic persona that originally earned him the “Super Cena” label.

Cena’s final run also includes his record-breaking 17th world title victory over Cody Rhodes at WrestleMania 41. He is now scheduled to defend the Undisputed WWE Championship against Rhodes, the 2025 King of the Ring winner, at SummerSlam in August.

This championship tour is set against the backdrop of his impending retirement. Cena has confirmed his final match will take place in mid-December 2025, with only 15 scheduled appearances left. He explained the decision was based on his physical condition.

“I can barely hang on right now… I have certainly lost a step. And I promised myself, and I made open, accountable promises to the fanbase, that when I get a step slower, I am stepping out the door.”

His next scheduled appearance is for the July 18 edition of SmackDown. Cena has assured fans this retirement is final and that he will not return to the ring, aiming to set a different example from other legends. However, his future remains with the company in a non-wrestling capacity.

“I love the company, it is my home, they are my family. Even after 2025, I have already signed an extension to remain a member of the WWE family for the near, mid, and long-term future.”

Outside of the ring, Cena’s transition continues with his acting career. His new film, Heads of State, co-starring Idris Elba and Priyanka Chopra, was released on July 2, and he is also preparing for the second season of Peacemaker. Despite playing the U.S. President in his latest movie, Cena has confirmed he has no interest in pursuing a political career.
