John Cena shares cryptic update, teases shocking opponent ahead of WWE return in 2025

John Cena’s final WWE run is a few months away and The Leader of Cenation is gearing up to return to the company in January. Today, the 16-time World Champion shared a cryptic update and posted an image of a star’s shocking past, which could potentially be his upcoming opponent. This would be Cody Rhodes in his former persona as Stardust, a gimmick he admits he wasn’t very fond of.

Cody Rhodes became the biggest face in the Stamford-based promotion after a heroic return to the company at The Grandest Stage of Them All in Texas. In many ways, Rhodes has donned the role of John Cena when The Leader of Cenation was a full-time performer in the promotion.

Today, John Cena shared a cryptic update. He uploaded an image of Stardust on Instagram with an all-American look. The tease could have several possibilities, but it was shocking to see a photo of Stardust, who hasn’t made an appearance in the company since 2016.

As of now, The Doctor of Thugonomics will make a comeback to the Stamford-based promotion in January when Monday Night RAW debuts on Netflix. It’ll be interesting to see what the global star will do following his return.

John Cena has a win over Stardust in WWE

In 2015, John Cena had a career resurgence when he focused on his in-ring abilities and sidelined the superhero act when he won his fifth WWE United States Championship from Rusev at WrestleMania 31.

The Leader of Cenation revived the division and the championship’s prestige in the coming months. The 16-time WWE World Champion held an open challenge every week for the title and gave new and underrated names a platform on Monday Night RAW.

Meanwhile, Cody Rhodes had transitioned into Stardust and moved away from Goldust. After failing to win the Intercontinental Championship at WrestleMania 31 in a Ladder match, Stardust remained a singles performer and answered John Cena’s open challenge on WWE RAW.

In the end, a springboard cutter followed by an Attitude Adjustment was enough to put Stardust down for a three-count. It’ll be interesting to see if the tease leads to a match between The American Nightmare and The Leader of Cenation in 2025.
