AJ Styles returned to WWE action at Royal Rumble 2025, entering the Men’s Royal Rumble match as the number 21 entrant. His appearance marked his first WWE competition since October 2024.

The former WWE Champion had last competed on the October 4, 2024 episode of SmackDown in a match against Carmelo Hayes, where he sustained an injury that sidelined him. Prior to this absence, Styles engaged in significant rivalries throughout 2024, including a program with The Judgment Day and pursuit of Roman Reigns’ Undisputed WWE Universal Championship.

Following WrestleMania 40, Styles challenged Cody Rhodes for the Undisputed WWE Championship, culminating in an I Quit Match at Clash at the Castle 2024. After this rivalry, he competed in Japan before returning to WWE television.
