Former WWE star Maven Huffman has challenged Bill Goldberg’s long-standing assertions about a potential real-life confrontation with William Regal, stemming from their controversial 1998 WCW match.
In a recent interview with WSI’s James Romero, Maven addressed Goldberg’s previous comments regarding his infamous match with Regal on WCW Nitro. The bout, which took place on February 9, 1998, drew widespread criticism for its noticeable lack of coordination between the two competitors.
“Bill’s a nice guy, sweetheart of a person,” Maven told Romero, “But, I mean, he lived off of this aura and he believed his own hype.”
Maven particularly took issue with Goldberg’s 2016 remarks on The Steve Austin Show, where the former WCW Champion suggested he would have dominated Regal in a legitimate fight. “Like, for instance, take the match he had with Regal in WCW, and if you interviewed Bill he would talk about how, ‘Oh, if it was a shoot, I would have killed him.’ No, you would not have,” Maven stated.
The controversy surrounding the Goldberg-Regal match has persisted for over two decades. During his appearance on Austin’s podcast, Goldberg implied that Regal had intentionally attempted to cause him harm during their encounter.
