With the landscape of Mexican wrestling shifting after WWE’s acquisition of AAA, questions surrounding the future of top stars have become prominent. Speaking recently with Bill Apter, fellow competitor Mr. Iguana addressed the persistent speculation about a potential WWE return for Alberto Del Rio.
When asked about the possibility, Mr. Iguana admitted he was unsure about Del Rio’s status, highlighting the unpredictable nature of the current environment. He noted the fascinating crowd reactions Del Rio is currently receiving in AAA, where a performer known as a major heel is now being embraced by the fans.
“I really don’t know. I mean, he was in WWE before — I remember I wrestled John Cena, he wrestled Randy Orton. So, I don’t, I really don’t know what’s the status of him. I just know in Mexico right now, in Triple A, Alberto is — I’m like, you can hear the crowd getting crazy for him and he’s like a big heel. And right now, I don’t know, Lucha Libre is so mysterious that from being the big heel, now people is cheering for him, he’s becoming a big baby face — big baby face.”
Iguana described this phenomenon as the inherent magic of Lucha Libre, where the audience ultimately dictates a wrestler’s direction.
“This is the magic of Lucha, you don’t know, you can’t control the crowd, because the crowd is the one that’s telling you what they want to see.”

The speculation stems directly from WWE’s blockbuster acquisition of AAA, announced over WrestleMania 41 weekend. As part of the deal, WWE will assume Del Rio’s existing AAA contract, though reports indicate he is not yet considered a full-fledged WWE roster member and his long-term role remains unresolved.
While his WWE future is uncertain, Del Rio’s immediate focus remains in Mexico. He is scheduled to challenge El Hijo Del Vikingo for the AAA Mega Championship this Sunday, June 15, at Triplemania Regia in what is being billed as a trilogy-concluding match.
Despite the ongoing discussions and Del Rio’s prominent role in AAA, previous reports have indicated that WWE has no current plans to feature him on its programming. This stance is said to be consistent across all departments, suggesting a return is not imminent.
