Ryback Praises WWE’s Controversial New Project

Amid a wave of criticism from some industry figures, former WWE performer Ryback has emerged as a vocal supporter of the upcoming Netflix docuseries, WWE: Unreal. While veterans like Jake Roberts have expressed concern that the show will “expose” the business, Ryback argued the project is a positive development for professional wrestling.

In a statement on Twitter, the former Intercontinental Champion detailed his perspective on the series, which promises a behind-the-scenes look at WWE’s creative process.

“I truly believe WWE: Unreal is one of the best things for wrestling and wrestlers. This is physical acting, the hardest thing in the world. We play roles and it takes all of us. No one really wins or loses. It’s time fans and dirt sheets stop the hate and understand what this is. It’s no different than movies, you’re given a role, and depending on your contract, sometimes you know exactly what it is, other times it’s week to week. No one shames actors for playing a bad guy or a small part. It takes everyone. Wrestling is one giant production.”

The series has already generated discussion following a trailer that revealed several scrapped match plans for WrestleMania 41. A report indicated that some of the talent named in the trailer only became aware of these creative pitches by watching the preview.

Ryback’s defense is particularly noteworthy given his contentious history with WWE. He left the company in 2016 and has since been an outspoken critic of its operations and former chairman, Vince McMahon. He has previously stated that for him to return, “serious wrongs need to be righted,” potentially with the involvement of The Rock.

This stance continues a pattern of Ryback weighing in on major industry topics. He recently defended former rival CM Punk over an apology related to WWE’s events in Saudi Arabia and has also publicly expressed his desire to be the final opponent for Goldberg, who is expected to have his retirement match in 2025.
