Scream – Matthew Lillard Reveals Expectations for Franchise’s Future

Eyeing Potential Return as Stu in Scream VII, Matthew Lillard Reveals Expectations for Franchise’s Future, Comments on 6th Movie Released in 2023

Speaking to GamesRadar+, the actor who was once one of the faces behind Ghostface expressed his satisfaction with Kevin Williamson, the universe’s creator, taking over the direction of the next sequel.

“I think the franchise is in a great place right now. I think it’s back in the right hands. I loved what Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin were doing before. Nothing against them. Actually, I thought they were taking a really exciting path.”

Despite the above statement, the actor who played Stu revealed that not everything in the latest released movie pleased him:

“I thought the sixth movie was too violent. I don’t think Ghostface needs a firearm, or anything like that. I think they need to try to repeat what we did in the past, but in different ways, preserving its essence. […] I hope Kevin takes this in a completely new, bold, and exciting direction.”

Currently in pre-production, plot details for Scream VII remain under wraps, although we know the sequel will feature the return of Neve Campbell (Sidney Prescott).

The theatrical release is scheduled for February 27, 2026.
