Konnan had some negative things to say about a current AEW champion. He even compared her to Kevin Owens.
Mercedes Mone has been on a meteoric rise since she joined AEW. She quickly won the TBS Championship and then won the NJPW Strong Women’s Championship at Forbidden Door 2024. If that wasn’t enough, she also holds the RevPro Undisputed British Women’s Championship after defeating Mina Shirakawa at Wrestle Dynasty this past weekend.
While she has been collecting titles for fun, Mercedes Mone has been on the receiving end of a lot of backlash from fans and critics who have complained about her promo skills.
Konnan took it one step further on his Keepin’ It 100 Official podcast when he said that she has become redundant even though she regularly wrestles. He blamed it on her character by saying that she was not entertaining like Kevin Owens. He also added that Tony Khan is using her frequently because he is paying her a lot of money, and he’s trying to get his ROI.
“Here’s the problem with Mone. She’s become kind of redundant even though when she wrestles, she has matches. But her character is very redundant. She’s not entertaining like let’s say a Kevin Owens or MJF or a Christian. She’s just not entertaining. The best part of her thing is her gear and what color and design is in her hair, and I almost feel like Tony’s like, ‘I’m paying her too much money. She has to be out there every show plus she has name value.’ But she isn’t really doing much….It’s either her writer, [Jennifer] Pepperman, Will Washington, or Tony Khan. Whatever they’re writing for her is not clicking and she’s not doing herself any favors either because she’s not that entertaining.” [9:10 – 10:18]
Eric Bischoff also criticized Mercedes Mone’s run in AEW
While Mercedes Mone has looked unstoppable since arriving in AEW, the fans haven’t rallied behind her since her big debut appearance. As the weeks pass, her booking has also made her less appealing to the fans, and her promo skills have only added more fuel to the fire. Konnan is not the only veteran to criticize the TBS Champion.
Speaking on his 83 Weeks podcast, Eric Bischoff labeled Mercedes Mone’s run in AEW a failure. He claimed that Tony Khan didn’t know how to properly produce her, which has resulted in lackluster booking. He further added that she was protected in WWE since people there understood how to use her.
“Mercedes Mone is not old, she’s relatively young, she was a massive star in WWE, massive, and she came to AEW and it’s been an unmitigated disaster because of her creative and because Tony doesn’t know how to produce her. In WWE she was protected because people understood what her strengths were, but more importantly, understood what her weakness were and they produced her accordingly.”
It will be interesting to see if Mercedes Mone can improve her character and become a force to be reckoned with.
