Shinsuke Nakamura’s surprise return to SmackDown, where he confronted LA Knight following a United States Title defense against Berto, has generated discussion about his future direction. Veteran journalist Bill Apter shared his thoughts on Nakamura’s comeback during Sportskeeda Wrestling’s UnSKripted.

While Apter praised the unexpected return, he expressed concerns about Nakamura’s potential trajectory in WWE. The journalist referenced past booking decisions that affected Nakamura’s position within the company, questioning the long-term plans for his rivalry with Knight.

According to Fightful Select, WWE planned Nakamura’s television return weeks before his appearance in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Although his name was not included in internal rundowns, it was present in the show’s script. His last televised bout took place on April 22 against Sheamus during Monday Night RAW.

LA Knight’s United States Title reign faces new challenge from returning star

LA Knight’s United States Championship reign enters a new phase with Nakamura’s return to SmackDown. Knight, who captured the title from Logan Paul at SummerSlam 2024, now faces a seasoned competitor in Nakamura.

The timing of Nakamura’s championship challenge remains uncertain. However, given his experience and previous accomplishments, this rivalry could significantly impact the United States Title picture on SmackDown.

“Nakamura coming back, nobody knew it was gonna happen. It was terrific ya, I liked it… I hope Nakamura is able to come up to the level that he was at the beginning when he first came in. You know they kinda messed his whole career up in WWE. He became a less-than-midcard at times. That really bothered me. So I think the feud between him and LA Knight should be okay, but I don’t you know, where do you go after that?”
