While fan speculation about Shinsuke Nakamura’s future continues amid a puzzling run in WWE, a new report has clarified his potential landing spots, effectively ruling out one major promotion while highlighting another as the most logical destination. According to industry analysis, a return to New Japan Pro-Wrestling appears to be the most probable path for Nakamura should he depart WWE, with AEW having no current interest.
The update came during a Fightful Select Backstage Report, where Sean Ross Sapp directly addressed whether AEW was pursuing the former IWGP Heavyweight Champion.
“Have you heard of any interest within AEW to bring in Shinsuke? Nope,” Sapp stated, shutting down the possibility.
While an AEW contract seems off the table, Sapp explained that a return to his old stomping grounds in Japan is the most sensible outcome. This move, he reasoned, could still potentially lead to crossover appearances down the line.
“I would imagine if he leaves WWE — I believe he’ll go back to New Japan and probably will work on some deals, work on a deal there that, like, would allow him to work AEW and New Japan, like a Forbidden Door or something like that,” Sapp added, clarifying this was based on industry logic rather than a confirmed report.

This analysis comes as Nakamura finds himself creatively adrift in WWE. His 2025 has been marked by a brief, experimental run with the United States Championship that ended in March when he lost the title back to LA Knight. Since then, Nakamura has been largely absent from television, fueling the speculation about his contract status, though company sources denied rumors of his departure earlier this year.
Despite his minimal presence on WWE programming, Nakamura reminded audiences of his star power in Japan with a special appearance for Pro-Wrestling NOAH on January 1, 2025. In a praised performance, he defeated Ulka Sasaki, showcasing the “King of Strong Style” that made him a legend in NJPW and a celebrated figure in his home country.
