The Young Bucks took a brief hiatus from wrestling after they lost the AEW World Tag Team Championship to Private Party on Fright Night Dynamite on October 30, 2024. They recently returned to the ring and won a major title but it was not in AEW.
Matthew and Nick Jackson participated in the IWGP Tag Team Title Three Way Match at the 2025 Wrestle Dynasty at Tokyo Dome in Tokyo, Japan. They defeated Los Ingobernables de Japon (Hiromu Takahashi & Tetsuya Naito) and United Empire (Great-O-Khan & Jeff Cobb) to win the vacant IWGP Tag Team Championship.
Following their win, backstage correspondent Emily Mae interviewed The Young Bucks and asked them to share their feelings about becoming champions at Tokyo Dome. Matt and Nick Jackson cut a babyface promo, stating they wouldn’t take this win for granted. They reminisced about their old days in Japan and said they never thought they would return to the Japanese promotion, let alone win titles.
Nick said, “It’s unbelievable, to be honest. We were just saying that in an interview a minute ago it really humbles you because you don’t know how many moments like this we have in our career. We’ve been going out for 20 years. It’s a long time and we’re probably more closer to the end than the beginning. So we gotta take moments like these not for granted. So we’re excited. We’re happy.”
Matt Jackson added about getting closure and how things previously ended in NJPW.
Matt added, “When we left here, it was six years ago. We announced AEW on our YouTube channel and then we did our final show here and I almost said my goodbye to this place, to this company. I remember me, you and Kenny [Omega] were the last one in the building. We were just trying to take it all in because this is it. I didn’t necessarily like the way things ended on a personal level. So it feels good to come back here six years later and to get a little bit of closure and to win to this again. This was not in my 2025 bingo card. I was like, ‘Are we ever gonna go to New Japan again? Are we ever gonna have the opportunity?’ So to do this again, to hold this title feels weird, this feels nostalgic. I like the way it feels. I can get used to this again.”
The Young Bucks are one of the top heels in AEW. Therefore, their backstage interview at Wrestle Dynasty was surprising as fans always see them insulting and downgrading people by superiorizing themselves.
The Young Bucks tease their return to AEW
During the same promo, The Young Bucks also addressed their absence from Tony Khan’s All Elite Wrestling. They teased a return to the Jacksonville-based promotion and hinted at resuming their duties as EVPs soon.
“Speaking of being EVPs, we have been working from home for a very long time. Who knows when we will be back? Maybe soon, maybe we will bring these (IWGP Tag Titles) to Dynamite on MAX,” stated The Jackson Brothers.
Kenny Omega returned to resume his role as the EVP of AEW. He also has a score to settle with The Young Bucks. How will it fare? Only time will tell.
