"They had me live under the ring" - Former WWE champion reveals why they weren’t allowed to "speak" for several years

WWE has seen many remarkable characters since its inception. One particular on-screen character who won over fans with his antics spoke up about the early part of his career.

Hornswoggle became a fan-favorite superstar due to his size and antics in the ring. He spent a long time being associated with Finlay and even teamed up with the latter on many occasions.

In an interview on The Undertaker’s Six Feet Under with Mark Calaway podcast, Hornswoggle revealed that he had initially been brought into the Stamford-based company to talk and was asked to do an Irish accent for his first promo alongside Finlay:

“I cannot do Irish. I cannot do any accent. I can hardly speak period. I asked Fit, ‘How do you think that went?’ And he went, ‘Not very good.'” [H/T WrestlingINC]

The former WWE Cruiserweight Champion added that he was sure he had messed up his shot at stardom after Finlay stated that his audition was “not very good.”

“Two weeks later I ended up getting a call that [I was hired.] Which is why they didn’t have me talk and had me live under the ring for 4 years,” Hornswoggle said. [H/T WrestlingINC]

Hornswoggle became a big deal in the company as fans got behind him throughout his career. He was exposed as the Anonymous RAW General Manager who had controlled the brand from June 21, 2010, to July 18, 2011.

He worked with Finlay for a long time and was also revealed as the illegitimate son of former WWE CEO Vince McMahon in kayfabe. He went on to work with TNA Wrestling for some time after leaving the Stamford-based company.
