Veteran criticizes Triple H’s approach with Travis Scott partnership

Former WWE head writer Vince Russo shared his thoughts about Triple H’s recent appearance at Travis Scott’s ComplexCon concert. During the appearance, Triple H presented Scott with the Hardcore Championship and extended an invitation for the January 6, 2025, episode of Monday Night RAW, which marks WWE’s Netflix debut.

Speaking on The Coach & Bro Show, Russo addressed WWE’s strategy of incorporating pop culture figures. “They bring in Bad Bunny, now they bring in Travis Scott. This is not your audience. What are they trying to do? They are trying to bring their audience to the show. I get it. Travis Scott has a huge audience, Bad Bunny, huge audience. They’re trying to bring them to wrestling. Here’s the problem.”

Russo noted that these collaborations often fail to retain viewers long-term. “They come over, they watch but there’s nothing that hooks them. The creative is so weak. There isn’t an Austin or The Rock that hooks them. So what happens? As soon as Bad Bunny collects his money and goes home, all [of] Bad Bunny’s followers go with him. As soon as Travis Scott collects his paycheck and goes home, all his fans [go home]. I don’t know why they do this.”

WWE faces challenges in retaining crossover audiences

Russo’s comments highlight WWE’s ongoing struggle to maintain viewership from crossover audiences.

The former head writer pointed to the absence of compelling characters like Stone Cold Steve Austin or The Rock as a key factor in failing to convert casual viewers into regular watchers, suggesting that WWE’s current creative direction may not effectively capitalize on these high-profile partnerships.
