WWE Hall of Famer Lita has addressed fan concerns about a memorable spot from her historic December 6, 2004, RAW main event match against Trish Stratus. During her appearance on Ring The Belle podcast, she clarified confusion surrounding a dangerous-looking suicide dive that had fans worried about her safety.
The spot in question saw Lita’s body contort awkwardly during the maneuver, leading newer fans to believe this was when she suffered her well-known neck injury. However, Lita revealed this wasn’t the case, explaining her neck had already been broken in 2002 during her work as a television stunt double.
“I hear a lot with younger fans that weren’t around for the first time that’s like, ‘That’s when you broke your neck?’ My neck had already been broken,” Lita explained. She attributed her resilience during the 2004 spot to having “titanium reinforcement” in her neck.
The match itself marked a milestone in WWE history as the first women’s bout to headline RAW, with Lita capturing her second WWE Women’s Championship in a victory over Stratus.
Championship reign cut short by injury setback
The triumph of Lita’s championship victory would be short-lived. In the subsequent title rematch at New Year’s Revolution, she suffered a legitimate knee injury during her defense against Stratus. The injury proved costly, as Stratus capitalized on the situation to reclaim the WWE Women’s Championship.
This sequence of events highlighted the physical toll of competing at the highest level in professional wrestling. Despite the injury risks, the matches between Lita and Stratus helped establish new standards for women’s wrestling in WWE, particularly through their groundbreaking RAW main event.
The rivalry between these two competitors continued to evolve, demonstrating both the intense competition and the real physical challenges faced by performers in pursuit of championship glory.
