The New Day, Paul Heyman, and The Miz have featured regularly on WWE television over the last decade. Vince Russo, WWE’s former head writer, says he is “tired” of seeing the same faces on main roster programming year after year.
Russo wrote storylines for WWE in the late 1990s when RAW often drew its highest television ratings. He left in 1999 to join WCW, where he worked as the head of creative and appeared as an on-screen authority figure.
On Sportskeeda’s The Wrestling Outlaws, Russo told Dr. Chris Featherstone and former WWE star EC3 that the creative team should revolve storylines around other people:
“I’m just tired. Bro, I’m tired of a lot of people on that show. It’s not just The New Day. I’m tired of Heyman, I’m tired of The Miz, I’m tired of The New Day. There’s just a lot of people I’m tired of, bro, and a lot of that has to do with creative.” [2:32 – 2:48]
Russo’s remarks were recorded before Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods separated from Big E on the December 2 episode of RAW.
Vince Russo on WWE stars “taking a roster spot”
After a five-month absence, Paul Heyman recently returned to television as part of a storyline involving CM Punk and Roman Reigns. The New Day and The Miz have also featured prominently on RAW over the last few weeks.
Vince Russo thinks the creative team’s continued reliance on experienced stars highlights a storytelling flaw:
“I mean, if they would have kept them relevant for all these years, maybe I wouldn’t feel the way I do, but you just have people that have been there for 10 years, man, and they’re really, in my opinion, just taking a roster spot. They gotta show me something in their booking, man.” [2:48 – 3:06]
After watching RAW this week, Russo also gave his take on how the creative team “grossly underutilizes” a former Tag Team Champion.
