Shane McMahon surprisingly met with AEW President Tony Khan in July 2024. Vince Russo, WWE’s former head writer, believes Vince McMahon could have been responsible for the meeting.
Vince McMahon has not been involved in the wrestling business since resigning as a board member of WWE’s parent company TKO in January 2024 amid misconduct allegations. His son Shane is also no longer under contract with WWE.
In an interview on The Hannibal TV, Russo speculated that Shane McMahon might have spoken to Khan on behalf of his father:
“Honestly, I think that was all about perhaps Vince dipping his toe in the water to see if AEW may be for sale and maybe Shane was the front guy because obviously Vince would have not been able to publicly pursue this. That’s what I think was behind that, just to see where AEW was from a business standpoint.” [30:51 – 31:24]
Russo also gave his thoughts on Vince McMahon’s current relationship with his daughter Stephanie and son-in-law Triple H.
Vince Russo on rumors Shane McMahon could work for Tony Khan
The unexpected meeting led to speculation about Shane McMahon possibly joining AEW in a behind-the-scenes or on-screen role.
Five months on from the meeting, Vince Russo does not think the 54-year-old is interested in working for Tony Khan:
“Shane McMahon wasn’t going to AEW to work for freaking Tony Khan,” Russo said. “Shane McMahon’s not gonna work for anybody at this point in his life. I think it went much, much deeper than that.” [31:24 – 31:35]
In the same episode, Russo called Triple H “creatively bankrupt” and said WWE’s Chief Content Officer should consider stepping aside.
