Matt Hardy expects Cody Rhodes to retain the Undisputed WWE Championship against Kevin Owens at Saturday Night’s Main Event on December 14.
“It’s pro wrestling, so I would never say never and you never know,” Hardy said on The Extreme Life of Matt Hardy podcast. “My guess is that they’ll have a hell of a match but Cody will retain.”
The upcoming title defense marks the second championship encounter between Rhodes and Owens, following their previous match at Bash in Berlin on August 31, where Rhodes emerged victorious.
Rhodes won the championship from Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 40 on April 7. The rivalry with Owens ignited after Rhodes formed a temporary alliance with Reigns, which Owens opposed.
Drawing from his experience during the tag team championship era of the late 1990s, Hardy discussed the potential booking strategy for the title match.
“Vince would always have the mindset like titles help the wrestler or the act get over, but if the act is already massively over then they really don’t need the titles,” Hardy explained.
Owens last held a world championship in WWE when he lost the Universal Championship to Goldberg at Fastlane 2017. Rhodes recently defended his position by defeating Chad Gable in a non-title match on the December 6 episode of SmackDown.
