Former WWE writer Vince Russo recently addressed the company’s current creative direction, specifically highlighting the notable absence of major stars from weekly programming. Speaking on Sportskeeda Wrestling’s Legion of RAW, Russo expressed concerns about WWE lacking key performers during its WrestleMania 41 build.
Russo pointed to the absence of John Cena and Roman Reigns from recent WWE television, including this week’s episode of RAW. Both superstars last appeared at Royal Rumble 2025, where they competed in the men’s 30-participant match but failed to secure the victory.
During the discussion, Russo connected the absence of these top stars to what he perceives as creative struggles in WWE’s current storytelling. He specifically referenced The Rock’s ongoing storyline as an attempt to compensate for the missing star power.
It’s missing John Cena. Cena’s not on any of these shows. Roman’s not on any of these shows. I don’t know, bro. There’s just no story, man. They’re trying to create something with this ‘I want your soul.’ But like I said, to me, it doesn’t make any sense.
Following the Royal Rumble, Reigns has been absent from WWE programming after suffering a brutal attack from Seth Rollins post-match. Meanwhile, Cena made a significant announcement during the post-event press conference, declaring himself as a participant in the upcoming Men’s Elimination Chamber match.
The Elimination Chamber event takes place this weekend in Toronto, where Cena will compete against CM Punk, Drew McIntyre, Logan Paul, Seth Rollins, and Damian Priest. The winner earns a championship opportunity against Cody Rhodes at WrestleMania 41.
