The Rock’s Key Partner Questions Reports on John Cena Heel Turn

Former WWE writer and Rock team member Brian Gewirtz directly challenges accuracy of two major Wrestling Observer reports about John Cena's heel turn timing and creative plans.

The Rock’s Key Partner Questions Reports on John Cena Heel Turn

Brian Gewirtz has disputed recent reports about John Cena’s heel turn at Elimination Chamber. The former WWE head writer and current member of The Rock’s team responded to Dave Meltzer’s claims on social media.

Meltzer published two reports on February 7 regarding Cena’s shocking heel turn, which occurred after his victory in the Elimination Chamber match. One report claimed the turn was originally planned for WrestleMania 41 rather than at Elimination Chamber.

According to Meltzer, the WrestleMania plan would have mirrored Steve Austin’s infamous 2001 heel turn when he aligned with Vince McMahon to defeat The Rock for the WWE Championship. The report stated this plan was changed on the day of Elimination Chamber.

Gewirtz responded concisely to these claims on social media, writing “0 for 2” in reference to Meltzer’s reporting. Gewirtz also took issue with Meltzer’s past reporting about why The Rock didn’t compete at WrestleMania 39.

The second report from Meltzer suggested The Rock initially wanted Cody Rhodes to turn heel instead of Cena. According to this report, Rhodes declined the pitch, leading to the idea being passed to Cena who agreed to the turn.

Meltzer’s report also included speculation that Cena would need to defeat Rhodes at WrestleMania due to the new alliance with The Rock, suggesting a loss would not make narrative sense given the powerful new partnership.

WWE has not officially commented on these reports or Gewirtz’s response. The John Cena heel turn remains one of the most discussed developments in wrestling following his shocking alignment with The Rock at Elimination Chamber.

Cena is scheduled to face Rhodes for the WWE Championship at WrestleMania 41. This match was set after Cena won the Elimination Chamber match to become the number one contender.
