Eric Bischoff Slams John Cena’s RAW Promo as ‘Lame’ Despite Strong Delivery

Eric Bischoff isn’t impressed with John Cena’s first heel promo after his shocking character change. The wrestling veteran shared his unfiltered take on Cena’s work during a recent episode of his 83 Weeks podcast.

It was exciting. ‘John Cena is turning heel. Oh, the potential.’ But there wasn’t anything dramatic about it other than the fact that he turned heel

Bischoff stated when discussing the March 17th Raw segment.

The former WCW executive acknowledged Cena’s delivery skills while criticizing the substance.

I did see the clip of his promo. I didn’t see a lot. I saw a clip of it. It was okay. I mean the delivery was great, but the message was kind of weak for that job.

Bischoff also addressed Cena’s unchanged appearance, explaining why that might actually be the right approach.

I think they’re doing it the right way for John. Because here’s the downside, if you completely change his character over, it’s almost too drastic.

He elaborated on the importance of making character transitions feel authentic.

It’s not authentic at all. There’s absolutely no degree of authenticity when you go in the room dressed like one character and you come out of the room dressed like another.

Sometimes the most effective character turns are subtle rather than jarring – will WWE’s nuanced approach to Cena’s heel persona ultimately prove more effective than a complete visual overhaul?
