WWE Plans to Introduce a New Championship; Major Update Revealed
WWE confirms tournament structure for Men’s and Women’s ID Championships launching during WrestleMania week, featuring matches across independent promotions beginning April 16.
WWE has officially unveiled the tournament structure for their recently announced ID Championships, providing wrestling fans with details on how the inaugural champions will be crowned. The developmental title tournaments are set to begin during WrestleMania 41 week in Las Vegas, featuring competitors from the company’s ID program.
The WWE ID social media account confirmed that the men’s championship tournament will utilize a double elimination format for its opening round, with competitors being eliminated after losing two matches. These preliminary contests will take place across various independent wrestling promotions until only four competitors remain, at which point the tournament will shift to a single elimination format to determine the champion. Meanwhile, the women’s championship will be decided through a round robin tournament structure, also hosted by independent promotions.
Triple H initially announced these new championship titles on February 18, positioning them as developmental opportunities for talent signed to the WWE ID program. The first confirmed match for the women’s tournament will feature Zayda Steel facing Kylie Rae at Game Changer Wrestling’s Las Vegas event on April 16. On the men’s side, Brad Baylor will battle Ice Williams at Future Stars of Wrestling’s show on April 18, also in Las Vegas.
This innovative approach represents an interesting evolution in WWE’s developmental strategy, creating championship opportunities that span across independent promotions while maintaining WWE branding.
