Jey Uso has added a complex new layer to Goldberg’s upcoming retirement match, declaring his hope that Gunther retains the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. The former champion’s desire for another opportunity against The Ring General could influence the outcome of the title bout scheduled for Saturday Night’s Main Event on July 12 in Atlanta.
During an appearance at the SummerSlam kickoff show at Fanatics Fest, Jey Uso made his intentions clear when asked about the match between Goldberg and Gunther.
I gotta go with Gunther. Because right now Gunther’s the better man… I want Gunther to win, I want Gunther to get past Saturday Night’s Main Event so I can run it back one more time with Gunther. I gotta knock that wall down to get to my next level.
This declaration opens the possibility of Jey getting involved to ensure Gunther wins, setting up a future title match. Such a scenario would prevent Goldberg from taking a clean loss in his final match while simultaneously reigniting the intense rivalry between Jey and Gunther.
The conflict between Gunther and Goldberg escalated after The Ring General mocked the Hall of Famer at Bad Blood 2024. Goldberg later returned on WWE RAW to challenge Gunther, setting the stage for their championship clash.
Jey Uso’s focus on Gunther stems from their recent history. After winning the 2025 Men’s Royal Rumble, Jey defeated Gunther for the World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania 41. However, his reign lasted only 51 days before Gunther reclaimed the title on the June 9 episode of WWE RAW by rendering Jey unconscious. Jey’s public backing of Gunther is driven by his goal to challenge for the championship one more time.
