Details On Tony Khan’s Bizarre ‘Father-Son’ Championship Idea That Was Scrapped

All Elite Wrestling has developed two new sets of tag team championships over the past year, but the titles are not currently in use, according to a report from Bodyslam. The company allegedly created both “Inter-Generational Tag Team Championships” and Women’s Tag Team Championships, which have been completed for approximately a year but remain inactive.

The concept for the Inter-Generational belts was reportedly centered around “father and son” pairings. This creative direction influenced a greater on-screen focus for duos such as Christian Cage and Nick Wayne, as well as Billy Gunn alongside The Acclaimed. The report also mentions that ideas were considered for actual father-son teams, including Ricky and Kerry Morton, and a potential partnership between Kevin Von Erich and one of his sons. A reunion of the Jurassic Express was also pitched in relation to the title plans.

Creative Plans and Wider Criticisms

The original plan for Cage and Wayne was for the duo to eventually face The Hurt Syndicate, a match that would culminate in a betrayal during a championship bout as part of a “wider plan.”

While AEW President Tony Khan has previously expressed interest in a women’s tag team division, both the Inter-Generational and Women’s Tag Team titles are said to be “sitting on the shelf.” The existence of these unused championships emerges amid other criticisms directed at Khan and the company’s creative strategy. Recent online discussions have included critiques of AEW for not being accessible enough to casual fans, skepticism over Khan’s public statements about the company’s growth metrics, and general dissatisfaction with booking decisions.
