The storied rivalry between John Cena and CM Punk has reached its definitive conclusion. Following the chaotic main event at Night of Champions, WWE’s Head of Creative, Triple H, confirmed that the clash between the two icons was their last, putting a final stamp on one of wrestling’s most significant modern feuds.
The final encounter took place on Saturday, June 28, in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, where John Cena defeated CM Punk to retain the Undisputed WWE Championship. The match, a centerpiece of Cena’s antagonistic 2025 farewell tour, was a dramatic, 26-minute affair. The finish came after Mr. Money in the Bank, Seth Rollins, interfered by striking Punk with his briefcase and a Stomp, allowing Cena to secure the victory. Despite Rollins’ appearance alongside Bron Breakker and Bronson Reed, his cash-in attempt was never officially started after being neutralized by Penta and Sami Zayn, meaning he retains the contract.
During the post-event press conference, Triple H addressed the significance of the main event, framing it as the official end of their on-screen history.
“It is just two generational stars coming together one last time. I think as much as it meant to fans here and around the world. I think that’s what it meant to John Cena to see CM Punk. I’m glad we were able to put that fight together to deliver it here in Saudi. I’m glad they got to do it before John called it a day,” he said.
With the controversial win, Cena’s retirement tour as the heel champion continues. The interference-laden finish protects Punk from a clean loss while advancing Cena’s run. All signs now point toward a major title defense at SummerSlam against the recently crowned King of the Ring, Cody Rhodes.
