AEW Takes Legal Action Involving Jon Moxley

The legal dispute involving AEW and its World Champion, Jon Moxley, has been elevated to the federal level. On July 3, the company filed to move a civil lawsuit initiated by production crew member Christopher Dispensa from Michigan state court, citing diversity of citizenship and a claimed lien over $215,000.

The lawsuit, originally filed in May, accuses both Moxley and AEW of gross negligence and assault. Dispensa, a contractor, alleges that during the May 10, 2023, episode of AEW Dynamite in Detroit, Moxley shoved him to the ground in an unscripted moment during a steel cage match against Kenny Omega.

According to the complaint, the incident resulted in severe neck and shoulder injuries that required cervical fusion surgery. Dispensa, who has not worked for the promotion since late 2024, is seeking more than $25,000 in damages. The suit accuses AEW of failing to control its talent and references Moxley’s alleged “documented history of unpredictability.”

This legal escalation comes at a critical time for the company, as Moxley is scheduled to defend his AEW World Championship against Adam Page. The title match, now a Texas Death Match, is set to headline the All In: Texas stadium show on July 12.

Despite the serious allegations, sources close to Moxley have refuted the lawsuit’s characterization, describing him as a respected “locker room leader.” His position within the company appears secure, as he signed a five-year contract extension in October 2022 that keeps him with AEW through 2027. There is currently no indication that his scheduled title defense will be altered due to the ongoing legal proceedings.
