While WWE’s new partnership with AAA has captured headlines, the company is also keeping its options open by monitoring talent from other major lucha libre promotions. According to a recent report, WWE has a significant interest in Mascara Dorada, the high-flying star currently performing for CMLL.
Although no formal negotiations have begun, Dorada’s name has reportedly surfaced in internal WWE discussions. This interest underscores a strategy to engage with elite luchadors beyond the scope of the AAA alliance, as WWE continues to reshape its approach to lucha libre in North America.
Dorada’s consistent, high-level performances have kept him on WWE’s radar, where he previously performed as Gran Metalik. His value has only increased through a series of major recent accomplishments in Mexico.
On June 17, Dorada challenged Bandido for the ROH World Championship at a joint CMLL and AEW & ROH event in Arena Mexico. Despite losing after a hard-fought match, he received a post-match invitation from Bandido to join AEW, to which Dorada responded positively.
His prominence within CMLL was further solidified when he advanced to the finals of the prestigious Copa Jr. VIP Tournament in late May. The path to the final was controversial, setting up a highly anticipated three-way match to determine the winner.
Currently recognized as a double champion in CMLL, holding both the World Historic Welterweight Championship and a third of the World Trios Championship, Dorada remains one of the promotion’s most vital talents. His continued success and international profile make him a key figure to watch as WWE expands its presence in Latin America.
