Talks surrounding a new video game from AEW have reportedly intensified, signaling a strategic pivot for the company’s gaming division. The update comes with a significant caveat: AEW plans to avoid the mistakes of its past by waiting until much closer to a planned release before making any official announcements.
The new direction follows the effective end of life for the company’s first major title, AEW Fight Forever. Publisher THQ Nordic has officially stated that no future updates are planned for the game, directing all inquiries about future projects to AEW itself. Fight Forever, developed by Yukes and released in June 2023, was met with a mixed reception. While its arcade-style gameplay earned praise, the title was widely criticized for its limited features, outdated roster, and underwhelming customization options, leading to disappointing sales.
Insider Gaming’s Mike Straw, who first reported on the renewed discussions, provided insight into the company’s new mindset.
“It’s not AEW related. But I can tell you, talks have picked up more on the AEW games front. What they won’t do, however, is announce anything too early this time. They know that was a mistake. When a new game/update comes, it will be closer to it’s planned released.”
This shift in strategy indicates that AEW is actively seeking a new development partner for its next venture, with the company expected to part ways with Yukes. AEW President Tony Khan has confirmed that more video games are in the pipeline, although he has stated no new title is planned for release in 2025. This deliberate pause aligns with the company’s goal of learning from the problematic rollout of Fight Forever, which was announced long before its eventual release.
