As John Cena continues his year-long farewell tour, a new report has identified the superstar currently planned to be his final opponent. According to WRKD Wrestling, current plans have World Heavyweight Champion Gunther slated to face Cena in his retirement match at the end of 2025.

This development positions Gunther in a significant role, coming just after he defeated Goldberg at the July 12 Saturday Night’s Main Event in what was Goldberg’s own retirement match. The potential booking suggests a pattern of positioning Gunther as the superstar who closes the book on the careers of legendary figures.

The long-term plan contrasts sharply with Cena’s immediate focus. As the reigning WWE Champion, Cena is currently embroiled in a heated rivalry with the 2025 King of the Ring winner, Cody Rhodes.
