WWE Adjusts Multiple SummerSlam Plans Following Seth Rollins Injury

A weekend injury to Seth Rollins has thrown WWE’s creative plans for SummerSlam into disarray, forcing the company to scrap what was expected to be a main event match against Roman Reigns. The incident has created significant backstage upheaval just weeks before the event.

The injury occurred this past Saturday at the State Farm Arena in Atlanta during a non-televised match against LA Knight. In front of nearly 12,000 people, Rollins tweaked his knee after a bad landing, leading to an abrupt and altered finish where Knight secured the victory. The situation was not part of a storyline, catching medical personnel unprepared and confirming the legitimate nature of the injury.

The immediate fallout caused chaos backstage, with the show’s final 40 minutes being changed on the fly. According to Bryan Alvarez, the WWE team was forced to scramble in real time to adjust the event’s conclusion.

“The whole last 40 minutes of that show were in disarray. I was told they had something planned for the end of the show which was not a Seth Rollins cash-in, but they had something planned for the end of the show, and because of this injury, it did not happen. So there were a lot of people that were working live on this show who, in the middle of a live event, were told, ‘Seth is hurt, we gotta change it.’ So they were scrambling and doing this.”

The longer-term creative plans appear to have been impacted even more severely. On Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer explained how the direction for SummerSlam was clear just a week ago but has now been completely altered.

“From last week’s show, it was very clear that it was going to be Roman Reigns against Seth Rollins at SummerSlam. I mean, very obvious, OK? It’s very obvious. Tonight, it’s very clear that it’s going to be Roman Reigns against Bron Breakker—or a tag with Roman and Jey against Bron Breakker and Bronson Reed. So something happened.”

Meltzer emphasized that this pivot was sudden and directly contradicts the narrative WWE was building, suggesting the injury forced the company’s hand.

“There’s no way this was the plan a week ago Monday. There’s just no way. He wouldn’t have done that promo clearly building Roman Reigns and him for the singles match, which was the plan for SummerSlam.”

With Rollins now expected to be out of action for a few months, his position on the SummerSlam card seems lost. This setback is compounded by his status as the current Money in the Bank briefcase holder, adding another layer of uncertainty to the championship picture as WWE is now forced to improvise around the absence of one of its top stars.
