Major Plans For AJ Styles Scrapped

Major Plans For AJ Styles Scrapped

The final version of AJ Styles return segment at TNA Slammiversary was the result of multiple creative changes, according to a report from Jon Alba of Sports Illustrated. While the ultimate goal was to celebrate his history as a pioneer of the X-Division, the path to that moment shifted just before the event.

Following Leon Slater’s victory to become the new X-Division Champion, Styles appeared in the ring to endorse the young star. In a symbolic moment, Styles praised Slater as the future of the division he helped build. This segment, however, was not the original plan.

Multiple TNA sources indicated that the initial creative direction involved a segment between Styles and fellow TNA original Frankie Kazarian. That plan was reportedly altered on the day of the show. This aligns with recent comments from both wrestlers, who have publicly expressed a desire to work together again in a TNA ring.

There is also a belief among sources that WWE was hesitant to have Styles commit to a future match with TNA. This reluctance may have influenced the final segment, as no main roster WWE talent has wrestled for TNA under the current working partnership. During his promo, when fans chanted for “one more match,” Styles acknowledged the desire but did not make a firm commitment, stating he would address it at another time.
