WWE star Chelsea Green has left social media after receiving a wave of severe online harassment, which included death threats, following her public comments on the legacy of Hulk Hogan. The former Women’s United States Champion announced her departure on July 26, citing the overwhelming negativity she faced.
The backlash began after Hogan’s reported death on Thursday, July 24, when Green appeared on CBS News 24/7. During the interview and in subsequent social media posts, she paid tribute to Hogan’s influence on wrestling while attempting to acknowledge his complicated history. This led to accusations that she was being dismissive of Hogan’s past controversies, particularly his racism scandal.
In an effort to address the criticism, Green deleted her original post and issued a formal apology to clarify her position.
“Let me be clear: my stance on racism is unwavering. I do not condone it—period,” Green wrote. “If my response (or tweet) seemed dismissive of real concerns, I sincerely apologize. That was never my intention. I tried to acknowledge a death respectfully, even when the legacy is complicated. I am learning one day at a time and will continue to learn.”
Despite her apology, the harassment escalated. Green ultimately decided to step away from the platform, explaining that the environment had become too toxic.
“I’ve tried to keep my page positive and comedic, but today, a lot changed… and it hit harder than I expected. The name calling, the death threats, the faceless accounts,” Green stated in her final message. “Social media was supposed to be a fun place and it hasn’t been for a while. It’s been overwhelming and I need to step away for a little bit.”
The incident has reignited discussions about the pressures placed on public figures to navigate controversial topics online. Observers have noted that other wrestlers who paid tribute to Hogan, such as Cody Rhodes, received significantly less backlash, fueling debate about potential double standards within wrestling fandom. The intensity of the attacks on Green has once again highlighted the issue of digital harassment directed at women in sports entertainment.
