WWE is allegedly considering a controversial "Make WWE Great Again" gimmick for a potential Alberto Del Rio return.

WWE Has Controversial Plans for Alberto Del Rio’s Return

A potential return for Alberto Del Rio to WWE could involve a provocative new character, according to recent statements from Lucha Libre Online’s Hugo Savinovich. The concept would see Del Rio adopt a “Make WWE Great Again” catchphrase and align himself with the United States.

Savinovich detailed the gimmick, which would involve a dramatic in-ring reveal.

“They’ve even talked about refreshing his gimmick—bringing him in with his usual assistant, waving the Mexican flag. But then—plot twist—he takes off the Mexican flag shirt and reveals an American flag with a new tag line: “Make WWE Great Again.” He says he’s no longer from Mexico or San Luis Potosí. That’s a heavy line for a Mexican—but fans know it’s storytelling. He says, “I’m Alberto Del Rio from Washington, D.C.” That’s the gimmick. It’s a refresh.”

This discussion is fueled by what Savinovich describes as significant internal support for Del Rio within WWE. He noted that influential figures, including The Undertaker, have been impressed with how Del Rio has carried himself as a major star in Mexico. This sentiment is reportedly shared by members of the creative team and roster.

“There are people in WWE impressed with Alberto and how he carries himself in Mexico—including The Undertaker. I was among the first to say The Undertaker was present at the AAA event in Juan de la Barrera. That matters. When Undertaker gives you a hug and tells you, “I know what you’re doing,” he doesn’t say things he doesn’t mean.”

Despite this backstage push, WWE’s official position remains unchanged. Reports from outlets like Fightful Select indicate there is currently “zero interest” from the company’s senior management in re-signing Del Rio, citing his history of off-screen controversies as a major obstacle. This creates a clear disconnect between the desires of some on the roster and the decisions made by the company’s leadership.

Speculation intensified following Del Rio’s recent departure from AAA on July 25, 2025, and a social media post from his former ring announcer, Ricardo Rodriguez, hinting at a potential reunion. However, as of August 1, there are no confirmed plans for Del Rio to appear in WWE, leaving his future uncertain amid conflicting internal and external signals.
