The moment R-Truth shaved his head on the June 9th episode of WWE RAW marked a significant turn for his character, but the memorable segment was not his original idea. In a recent conversation with The Ringer, Truth revealed he initially pushed for his on-screen rival, John Cena, to be the one to do the honors.
Truth explained his effort to get Cena involved, an idea rooted in the ongoing joke about their resemblance.
“I was actually trying to get Cena to cut my hair, but that was not gonna happen. That would’ve been fire,” R-Truth said.
The concept evolved during a backstage discussion that eventually included Triple H. Truth mentioned that while he and Road Dogg would often joke about going bald, he secretly felt insecure about his hair loss. The situation came to a head when Truth told Triple H he was having “Ron Cena” shirts made to play up their “twin” connection.
“Then I’m like, you know, Cena and I are brothers, we look alike, blah blah blah… Bro, then Hunter came up with this joke. He said—’cause me and Road Dogg always joked about, ‘Yeah, we going bald,’ but deep down I’m like, ‘Damn, I’m going bald. I’m losing it.’ But I wasn’t gonna let them know that.”
Triple H seized the opportunity with a punchline that ultimately convinced Truth to commit to the haircut.
“Then Hunter hit me with this joke. I told him, ‘Hey, I’m getting these Ron Cena shirts—Cena’s gonna be my brother, we’re twins!’ And he goes, ‘Oh we can’t tell y’all apart. Oh wait, we can—one’s going bald on the top, the other’s going bald in the front.’ I popped. Then I was like, ‘See, you gotta let me cut it,'” Truth recounted.
This backstage moment occurred amid one of WWE’s most personal and escalating rivalries. The feud with Cena, which R-Truth recently declared is “far from over,” has seen him return from a brief release to ambush Cena at Money in the Bank and attack him repeatedly on SmackDown. While the haircut segment didn’t feature Cena, it added another unique chapter to their intense, ongoing storyline.
