Following a post on social media from Sammy Guevara, the AEW and ROH tag team appears to have split as Dustin Rhodes recovers from major double knee replacement surgery.

AEW Tag Team Officially Splits

Sammy Guevara has seemingly announced the end of his fan-favorite tag team with Dustin Rhodes, The Sons of Texas. In a message posted to X/Twitter, Guevara suggested a new direction for his career while his partner remains sidelined with a long-term injury.

“Teaming with Dustin Rhodes was an honor, but every chapter ends so a new one can begin. #BestEver,” Guevara wrote.

Guevara’s statement comes as he is scheduled to defend the ROH World Tag Team Championships at the upcoming Death Before Dishonor pay-per-view. With Rhodes unable to compete, Guevara will team with a mystery partner to take on The Outrunners.

The forced change stems from a successful double knee replacement surgery Rhodes underwent on August 21. The 56-year-old has since begun rehabilitation, sharing updates on his progress. Despite the difficult recovery ahead, Rhodes has firmly stated his career is not over, responding to a fan’s inquiry by saying, “Hell nah. I am in love with this business.” He also confirmed he has more than two years left on his current AEW contract, though a return is not anticipated before 2026.

The severe injuries were integrated into a storyline that culminated on the July 31 episode of AEW Collision. After losing the TNT Championship to Kyle Fletcher in a brutal, five-star rated Chicago Street Fight, Rhodes was subjected to a post-match assault where Fletcher attacked his knees with a chair and a screwdriver, providing a narrative reason for his absence.

According to wrestling journalist Dave Meltzer, Rhodes went into the match aware that his knees were in poor condition and that the diagnosis was worse than initially thought, necessitating the rare double replacement procedure.

While Guevara is moving forward with a new partner for the ROH World Tag Team Championship defense, Rhodes also holds the ROH World Six-Man Tag Team Championship alongside Marshall and Ross Von Erich. AEW and ROH have not yet made an official announcement regarding the status of the six-man titles during Rhodes’ recovery.
