Sammy Guevara is once again a champion, capturing the vacant ROH World Tag Team Championship alongside the surprising partner Rush at last night’s Death Before Dishonor. The victory was immediately overshadowed by Guevara’s definitive heel turn, as he attacked his former allies, The Von Erichs.
The AEW star broke his silence on the matter earlier today, taking to X/Twitter to declare, “Everyone’s favorite Pillar is Champion once again. #BestEver.”
The path to the championship was paved by an injury to Dustin Rhodes, whose double knee replacement surgery months ago forced both the ROH World Tag Team and Six-Man Tag Team titles to be vacated. Guevara, who held the tag titles with Rhodes, was part of the “Sons of Texas” stable with Rhodes and the Von Erich brothers. After Guevara and Rush defeated The Outrunners to claim the gold, the Von Erichs entered the ring for what appeared to be a reconciliation.
Following a brief hug, Guevara delivered a superkick to his former partners, cementing his new alliance with Rush’s La Facción Ingobernable as fellow member Dralistico joined the beatdown.
The betrayal was even more pointed considering Guevara’s activities earlier in the evening. Before teaming with Rush, he had joined Marshall and Ross Von Erich in an unsuccessful bid to recapture the vacated ROH World Six-Man Tag Team Championship, losing to Shane Taylor Promotions. His failure with his allies stood in stark contrast to his championship success just hours later with a new faction.
The reveal of Rush as Guevara’s partner defied some fan speculation, which had leaned toward a potential reunion with Chris Jericho. The turn itself has drawn a divided response online. While some fans believe Guevara is more effective as a heel and will benefit from being the “mouthpiece” for La Facción Ingobernable, others have criticized the frequency of his character shifts between face and heel, drawing comparisons to Paul Wight’s numerous turns throughout his career.
