Former WWE Champion Officially Retires From Pro-Wrestling

The in-ring career of Eddie Colón, formerly known as Primo in WWE, has come to an end. On August 30, Colón was defeated by Ray Gonzalez at the World Wrestling Council’s 52nd Anniversary event in Bayamon, Puerto Rico. The match carried a heavy stipulation: the loser would be forced to retire from competition, a fate that sealed the 42-year-old’s career.

Colón’s retirement from wrestling occurs independently of WWE, the company that released him and his cousin Epico (Orlando Colón) back on April 15, 2020, as part of company-wide budget cuts. While Colón’s time as an active competitor is over, his brother, Carlito, recently returned to the same WWC promotion after his own WWE contract expired in June of this year.

During his tenure with WWE, Colón was a fixture in the tag team division. He is most remembered for his long-standing partnership with his cousin Epico. The duo underwent several transformations, starting as Primo and Epico, managed by Rosa Mendes. Under this name, they captured the WWE Tag Team Championship in January 2012, holding the titles until late April of that year.

Over the years, the team was repackaged multiple times. In 2013, they became Los Matadores, a masked team of bullfighters named Diego (Primo) and Fernando (Epico), accompanied by their mascot, El Torito. They later transitioned into The Shining Stars in 2016, a gimmick that focused on their Puerto Rican heritage, before finally competing under their family name, The Colóns, until their release.

Before his extended run with Epico, Colón also achieved significant success alongside his brother, Carlito. At WrestleMania 25, the two brothers unified the WWE Tag Team Championship and the World Tag Team Championship, marking a high point in his decorated career as a tag team specialist.
