The Undertaker revealed that Vince McMahon once forced him and Kurt Angle to remain in an empty arena to reshoot a botched match conclusion. The incident occurred after a camera crew failed to capture a key part of the planned finish. McMahon became irate and demanded the two legends redo the final sequence long after the audience had departed.
The match’s intended ending involved Angle pinning The Undertaker while simultaneously tapping out to the Hell’s Gate submission. However, the production team missed the camera angle showing Angle’s submission.
On his Six Feet Under podcast, The Undertaker described McMahon’s immediate reaction. “He is bats—t crazy. He’s like, ‘We gotta do it over.’ And the crowd is gone.”
Angle detailed the unusual logistics required for the late-night production. They waited two hours for the building to clear before placing WWE employees in a section of seats to create the illusion of a crowd.
“We had to be there till 1 am to do this,” Angle stated.
The crew used roadies and event staff holding signs to complete the shot. Both performers worried the unorthodox reshoot would ruin what they considered a “killer match.” The Undertaker admitted, however, that when the footage was edited together, the result was “seamless.”
The story of McMahon’s extreme measures adds another layer to the well-documented history between the two Hall of Famers.
On the same podcast, both men debunked the theory that Angle was ever scheduled to end The Undertaker’s undefeated streak. They confirmed a match was discussed, but Vince McMahon decided against it for WrestleMania, instead booking their classic encounter at No Way Out one month prior.
