WWE has issued a public apology to Becky Lynch after AJ Lee walked out of SmackDown with her Women’s Intercontinental Championship. In a video shared on social media, the company acknowledged the situation with a direct message to the champion.
“Sorry @beckylynchwwe, but it looks like AJ has claimed that Women’s IC Title for herself now 🤷♀️,” WWE posted.
The incident was the culmination of a heated in-ring confrontation. The segment escalated when Lynch slapped CM Punk, prompting an attack from Lee. Following the assault, Punk encouraged Lee to take the championship belt, and she left with the title in her possession.
This physical altercation is the latest chapter in a storyline that prompted Lee’s return to the company after more than a decade. The on-screen conflict began with Lynch taunting Lee’s husband, CM Punk, which directly set the stage for Lee’s involvement.
Lee is now scheduled to appear on tonight’s episode of WWE Raw in Milwaukee. The appearance is expected to build towards a mixed tag team match at Wrestlepalooza on Saturday, September 20. The anticipated bout would see Lee and CM Punk team up against Lynch and her likely partner, Seth Rollins. If it happens, the match would be Lee’s first since she retired from wrestling in 2015.
Following her return, Lee addressed her supporters online, reinforcing the motivation for her current run.
“You’ve had my back for a decade. This run is for you, my wonderful weirdos.”
