Mastering the microphone is one of pro wrestling’s most difficult skills, and the challenge is even greater for international talent working in a second language. Stephanie Vaquer is facing that hurdle directly as her WWE career reaches a pivotal moment.
In a conversation with Chris Van Vliet, Vaquer explained the process behind her promos. She emphasized that her measured pacing is not hesitation, but the result of translating her thoughts from Spanish to English in real time. “I don’t want people to think, why does she speak so slow? It’s because I try to translate everything,” she said.
She noted the difficulty in finding the right words, as direct translations don’t always carry over. “Sometimes it’s not the same in Spanish. Maybe it makes sense in Spanish, but in English it’s like, what? So it’s hard. It’s difficult. But I hope one day… I just need more time and learn more.”
The timing of this challenge is significant. On Saturday, Vaquer will compete in one of the biggest matches of her career when she faces IYO SKY for the Women’s World Championship at Wrestlepalooza in Indianapolis. The match was made official on Raw weeks ago, and despite speculation surrounding her health, she is expected to be cleared for the event.
Vaquer is taking an active approach to improving her English, confirming that she attends weekly classes and views every opportunity to speak as practice. “I try to be brave and say, yeah, let’s do it, because I know my English is not perfect. But if I try every day, I need to learn more. So I like it.”
