Former WWE writer Vince Russo has publicly questioned the qualifications of Paul “Triple H” Levesque, arguing that WWE’s Chief Content Officer is unsuited for the role. Speaking on a recent episode of his Writing with Russo podcast, Russo claimed Levesque’s position stems from his marriage to Stephanie McMahon, not his creative abilities.
Russo elaborated, saying Levesque is “not qualified at all” from a creative standpoint and pointed to “so many freaking holes creatively” in the current WWE product as proof.
“From a creative standpoint, he is not qualified at all. And what I’m talking about is basic fundamentals—basic babyface-heel fundamentals. He is not qualified when it comes to creative.”
He challenged the notion that a successful in-ring career automatically qualifies someone for a top creative role. Russo compared the situation to other sports, arguing that great athletes do not always become great coaches or owners.
“These guys were great players. But I am telling you… writing and formatting and directing a crew of creative writers has nothing to do with how many championships you won.”
While dismissing Levesque’s suitability for his current role, Russo conceded that a backstage position as a producer, agent, or co-running the NXT developmental brand would be appropriate. However, he insisted Levesque would never have reached his current status without his family ties.
Russo concluded by naming who he believes should hold the creative position, stating it belongs to Shane McMahon.
“There’s no question if he never married Stephanie, that spot should be Shane McMahon’s. Without a shadow of a doubt, that should be Shane.”
Russo’s comments add to ongoing criticism of WWE’s creative head. On September 22, AEW’s MVP said on the Inside the Ring podcast that he has “zero respect” for Levesque, citing undisclosed personal and professional reasons.
