Matt Cardona returned to WWE programming for the first time in over five years on the September 23 episode of NXT. He appeared as part of the ongoing TNA invasion angle, but according to Fightful Select, Cardona is not under contract with TNA and is positioned as a free agent within the storyline.
His presence was first seen in a brief parking lot cameo behind NXT Champion Oba Femi. Later, he appeared in the crowd during the Title vs. Title main event between Femi and TNA World Champion Trick Williams, drawing a strong reaction from the audience.
The key detail, as reported by Fightful Select, is Cardona’s free-agent status. He has been working for TNA without a formal contract since returning earlier this year, a notable shift from the company’s prior policy of avoiding the use of unsigned talent.
Cardona’s independence makes him a major wild card as the invasion builds toward TNA’s Bound For Glory on October 12. The former United States Champion has openly expressed interest in a WWE return, and his role in the angle adds unpredictability to both promotions.
The episode closed with a large-scale brawl between WWE and TNA rosters after the main event. Trick Williams retained the TNA World Championship via disqualification when Mike Santana interfered. The chaos escalated with appearances from Frankie Kazarian, Eric Young, and The IInspiration.
After the broadcast, Cardona addressed his return on X, writing: “Driving home from @WWENXT… Don’t count out @ThisIsTNA… and don’t count out THE COMPLETE MATT CARDONA!”
