A notable statement has been made by pro wrestling veteran Konnan, who believes WWE is failing Drew McIntyre by booking him to lose too frequently in world championship matches. The critique was delivered during a recent episode of the Keepin’ It 100 podcast, following McIntyre’s latest unsuccessful title challenge against Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes at Wrestlepalooza.
Speaking on the matter, Konnan asserted that McIntyre’s skills warrant a significant championship run. “I just think he loses too much when he’s going for the title. They need to give it to him and give him a good run. I mean, he deserves it. He’s great on the mic. He’s great in the ring,” he said.
The loss at Wrestlepalooza is the latest in a series of high-profile championship defeats for McIntyre. Since WrestleMania 40, he has had three world title opportunities, including a loss to Damian Priest in their rematch at Clash at the Castle: Scotland. Last year, McIntyre’s Money in the Bank victory was nullified when CM Punk’s interference cost him the title on the same night he won the contract.
McIntyre’s last world title win at WrestleMania 40, where he captured the World Heavyweight Championship, lasted only about five minutes before Damian Priest successfully cashed in his Money in the Bank contract. This stands in contrast to his previous major victory at WrestleMania 36, where he defeated Brock Lesnar to become the WWE Champion.
Konnan’s commentary on McIntyre’s booking comes as the former champion is embroiled in a new on-screen conflict. During the September 26 episode of WWE SmackDown in Orlando, Florida, McIntyre was confronted and attacked by Jacob Fatu. The segment began with McIntyre, wearing a walking boot, cutting a promo aimed at Cody Rhodes and WWE officials.
Fatu interrupted and accused McIntyre of constantly complaining, telling him to “stop b–ching!” and to sit his “peg leg a– down.” The verbal exchange escalated when McIntyre delivered a Glasgow Kiss, but Fatu immediately retaliated with a superkick that sent the walking boot flying off McIntyre’s foot, leaving Fatu standing tall to close the segment.
